History Made – Julia Gillard Australia’s First Female PM

At around 9.30 this morning, June 24th, 2010, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard was was elected unopposed by the Labor Parliamentary Caucus to be Australia’s new Prime Minister.

The election makes her Australia’s first female Prime Minister, and she is currently on her way to Government House to be sworn in by Governor-General Quentin Bryce, the first woman to hold the role of Governor-General in Australia too.

A leadership spill was announced late last night, and after losing the support of many caucus members, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd stepped down, paving the way for Ms Gillard to be elected unopposed.

She was born in on September 29, 1961, in Barry, Wales. She is the daughter of a coal miner and migrated to Australia with her family in 1966, where they settled in Adelaide. She was the leader of the Australian Union of Students, and an industrial lawyer for left-leaning firm Slater and Gordon, admitted at age 29 as one of their first female partners.

She is unmarried and has no children and has, in the past, been cricitised as “deliberately barren” because of this.

Regardless of how you feel about her, her policies, the Labor Party, or the fact that she’s a redhead, the fact that a woman now holds the highest office in the country is wholly exciting.

I hope she calls an early election while she’s still in her honeymoon period as our new PM, and that she leads the Labor Party to a victory against the Coalition, led by misogynist hypocrite Tony Abbott. Because THAT would really piss him off.
